Bruce Magnell
Senior Oceanographer, Senior System Engineer
Woods Hole Group, Inc., Oceanography and Measurement Systems Division
Dr. Bruce A. Magnell is the technical director of Woods Hole Group’s Oceanography and Measurement Systems division, and is responsible for the design, construction, installation, and operation of real-time systems, including Met-Ocean buoy systems, around the world. He also supervises scientific studies, including analysis and interpretation of physical oceangraphic and meteorological data. Dr. Magnell has more than 34 years of experience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, EG&G, Inc. and the Woods Hole Group, Inc. in applied science and ocean engineering for a wide range of commercial and government clients. His fields of expertise include physical oceanography, electrical engineering, oceanographic instrumentation design and evaluation, signal processing, data analysis, data acquisition, real-time telemetry, and technology evaluation. He has extensive experience in the analysis of coastal ocean dynamics, especially wind-driven circulation and mixing on the continental shelf. He has been the Principal Investigator for oceanographic data collection programs in offshore areas of the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Dr. Magnell is WHG’s principal designer of real-time data acquisition and telemetry systems, including Met-Ocean systems for the offshore oil industry, port and harbor real time systems for NOAA, and a variety of deep and shallow water buoy systems. He specializes in on-board data acquisition, processing, and real-time data telemetry techniques. Dr. Magnell received the Sc.D. degree in Physical Oceanography in 1973 from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, and previously received two Master of Science degrees (Physical Oceanography and Electrical Engineering) from MIT, and the Bachelor of Science degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering.
